Computing. A student model trained only on number sequences from a teacher model inherited the teacher's traits, even after filtering. The effect vanished when teacher and student had different base models, which makes distillation within one model family the case to worry about. Preprint.

Software. In open-source Java repositories adopting agentic coding tools, architectural smell counts stayed flat while lines of code grew 12.8 percent. The reported 6.7 percent drop in smell density was therefore the denominator moving, which is a caution for every density metric in these studies. Preprint.

Computing. Five AI agents lost up to 46.7 percent of benchmark performance when users steered them towards a plausible but misleading solution. The XY problem, asking about an attempted fix instead of the actual problem, is older than the agents; a system instruction about it only partly helped. Preprint.

Software. Language-based agent control makes agents emit programs that must type-check against the scaffolding code, so unsafe programs are rejected before execution. Static typing has enforced access control and information flow for decades; the case studies cover filesystem sandboxing, data provenance and information-flow control. Preprint.

Physics. Two families of analytic three-dimensional MHD equilibria have been extended with a parameter that breaks stellarator symmetry. The parent families, recent counterexamples to Grad's conjecture, give stellarator equilibrium codes exact answers to be checked against. Preprint.

Mathematics. A preprint simplifies the recent OpenAI proof that there are no Landau–Siegel zeros. Siegel zeros are why some class number bounds have been ineffective since 1935; a shorter proof is also a quicker one to check. Preprint, not yet checked.

Materials. A pulsed additive manufacturing method printed metre-tall, centimetre-wide single crystals of Ti-6Al-4V and refractory metals including tungsten. Single crystals are usually grown slowly from a melt in fixed shapes; printing them free-form allows architected geometries in metals that resist ordinary processing. Peer-reviewed.

Climate. An AI tool refined physics-based and AI weather models, improving forecasts of precipitation, temperature and pressure three to five weeks ahead. The subseasonal range sits between weather and climate prediction, where skill has historically been thin; early warning of heat, cold and flooding is the use case. Peer-reviewed.

Climate. A 450,000-year Amazon stalagmite record shows monsoons in both hemispheres failed for millennia during warm intervals. Ordinarily the two hemispheres trade strength, one monsoon weakening as the other strengthens; the record suggests warming can break that seesaw. Peer-reviewed.

Neuroscience. In human neurons and mice, loss of UBE3A caused an overabundance of asparagine synthetase linked with many Angelman syndrome phenotypes. UBE3A has been the known Angelman gene for decades; a single downstream enzyme gives therapy a narrower target than restoring the ligase itself. Peer-reviewed.

Materials. Compostable polyesters with embedded ester-cleaving enzymes biodegraded completely at marine sites from coastal water to the deep sea. Compostable plastics are designed for industrial composters and tend to persist in the sea, where the microbes that would digest them are scarce. Peer-reviewed.

Physics. COHERENT measured coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering on germanium with its Ge-Mini array, the most precise cross section to date. The process was predicted in 1974 and first seen in 2017; precision on the cross section is what turns it into a test of the Standard Model. Peer-reviewed.

Physics. A device stores a single positron and controls its quantum states, set up to measure the positron's magnetic moment. Comparing it with the electron's tests CPT symmetry; the electron value from the same group is among the most precisely measured quantities in physics. Peer-reviewed.

Physics. A certified spectral-computation framework resolves Cantor-like spectra of quasicrystalline Hamiltonians without the spurious eigenvalues finite-patch diagonalization introduces. Spectral pollution reports states the infinite system does not have, which is awkward when the gaps are the object of study. Peer-reviewed.

Computing. In an independent evaluation on twenty-nine months of hourly ERCOT prices, the t0 forecasting models cut lagged-price baseline error by thirty-eight percent. Independent evaluations of forecasting models are rarer than the leaderboards they are meant to check. Preprint.

Computing. One step of recursive harness editing improved GLM-5 and Gemini 3.5 Flash agents by up to 11.5 points on WorkBuddy-Bench. The model weights did not change; only the scaffolding around them did, and it was edited without a ground-truth checker. Preprint.

Physics. A protocol using local projective measurements and unitary feedback prepares ground states of frustration-free gapless quantum systems. Gapless states carry long-range correlations, which is exactly what slow adiabatic preparation struggles to reach in finite time. Peer-reviewed.

Physics. Exact unstable Navier-Stokes solutions, usually computed in minimal boxes, have been carried over to spatially extended turbulent flows. A minimal domain holds one coherent structure at a time; real flows hold many, and they interact. Peer-reviewed.

Physics. Interaction cross sections were established as a quantitative structural probe of hypernuclei, benchmarked on the hypertriton. The hypertriton holds its lambda particle so loosely that its size has been hard to pin down by any method. Peer-reviewed, single author.

Materials. A first-principles framework computes internal conversion rates in optically active spin defects, which common approximations underestimate by orders of magnitude. Internal conversion is a dark decay path, so it quietly sets how bright and readable defects like the nitrogen-vacancy centre can be. Peer-reviewed.

Materials. An analysis of the Kubo formula found a mechanism that may explain insulating out-of-plane resistivity in layered metals like strontium ruthenate. These materials conduct like metals in the plane and like insulators across it, which textbook transport theory had no tidy way to allow. Peer-reviewed.

Chemistry. A thermodynamically consistent machine-learning potential simulates electrochemical interfaces at constant applied voltage, treating electrons grand-canonically. Standard machine-learning potentials hold the electron count fixed, which is not how an electrode under voltage behaves. Peer-reviewed.

Mathematics. A family of polytopes called in-in zonotopes organises the contributions to scalar equal-time correlators in flat space. It continues the habit, begun with the amplituhedron, of finding that messy sums of diagrams are really the faces of one shape. Peer-reviewed, single author.

Computing. A thirteen-billion-parameter model trained to predict several future tokens solved twelve percent more HumanEval problems than a next-token model. The extra output heads cost no training time, and models predicting four tokens also ran up to three times faster at inference. Preprint.

Materials. Long-range orbital effects in titanium come from orbital accumulation converted to spin current and back, not long orbital diffusion lengths. Long orbital diffusion lengths were the usual reading of titanium's reach; on this account the orbital signal hands the travelling to spin current. Peer-reviewed.

Computing. A theoretical paper argues complexity has no causal influence on generalisation and only appears to through confounding. Simpler models generalising better is close to an assumption in machine learning; here the correlation is attributed to weak constraints taking simple forms. Preprint.

Computing. An agent switching between latent reasoning and text tool calls scored 10.4% higher across eleven benchmarks with up to 54.7% fewer tokens. Latent reasoning was efficient but could not call tools or be inspected, which kept it out of working agents. Preprint.

Physics. An experiment resolved the momentum kick from a single gas molecule striking a levitated nanoparticle. Gas collisions are usually the background noise in such sensors; counting them one at a time turns the noise into a measurement. Peer-reviewed.

Mathematics. Time-averaged observables generically show singularities at the onset of oscillation in Hopf bifurcations, though no stationary state is singular. Hopf bifurcations are the standard route to self-sustained oscillation in driven systems; the cause turns out to be geometric, from phase averaging. Peer-reviewed.

Software. A backdoor planted in Qwen3-4B behaved maliciously only when served on one chosen hardware platform, triggered by floating-point divergence. Audits run on one machine and serving happens on another, and the model now knows the difference. Preprint.

Physics. Antimony-112 shows two chiral doublet bands just thirty-six kiloelectronvolts apart on average, the most degenerate pair observed in nuclei. Ideal nuclear chirality predicts two identical bands, so the size of the gap is the measure of how close a nucleus comes. Peer-reviewed.

Computing. A seven-million-parameter looped transformer reached 97.9% exact accuracy on Sudoku-Extreme and kept improving past 20,000 test-time steps. Looped models usually degrade with more iterations, overwriting correct intermediate steps; the authors call it latent overthinking. Preprint.

Physics. A spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in a ring trap realised a synthetic Hall torus by cyclically coupling three hyperfine spin states. The ring supplies one periodic direction and the spin coupling the other, which is how a torus is assembled when none is available. Peer-reviewed.

Physics. In two dimensions, interactions push the transition from a Chern insulator to an ordinary band insulator onto the Gross-Neveu-Yukawa fixed point. The transition breaks no symmetry, so it is a clean case of criticality beyond Landau's framework, now pinned to a known universality class. Peer-reviewed.

Computing. Randomised trials with 1,222 participants found AI assistance raised short-term scores but left people worse and quicker to quit unassisted. Persistence is one of the strongest predictors of long-term learning, which makes it an awkward thing to outsource. Preprint.

Physics. Compressible magnetised turbulence simulations on up to 10,368 cubed grid cells revealed two distinct alignment laws in the cascade. Patchy alignment appears throughout magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, but its role in moving energy down the cascade had been unclear. Peer-reviewed.

Computing. A 3.6-centimetre bipedal robot with one motor and no feedback control walked at ten leg lengths per second. By that measure it is the fastest biped robot of any size; it skips, turns and climbs steps with open-loop control. Preprint.

Biology. After airway injury, alveolar type two stem cells migrated between lung compartments and became bronchiolar cells that helped repair airways. These cells were assigned to the air sacs and gas exchange; the airways were supposed to be someone else's job. Peer-reviewed.

Neuroscience. A cultured haematopoietic stem cell platform identified the elongation factor ELP1 as an important regulator of brain myeloid differentiation. Microglia and other brain myeloid cells are difficult to study outside a living brain, so a dish that makes them is a tool in itself. Peer-reviewed.

Physics. Experiments, simulations and asymptotics show a smooth saddle alone produces a logarithmically singular ridge in draining thin films. Abrupt build-up in coatings and lava flows was usually blamed on sharp edges or defects; a smooth curve is enough. Peer-reviewed.

Computing. Two inertial sensors in a wrist strap detected surface taps with an F1 score of 0.997 and identified which finger made them. Virtual reality input still mostly means waving at the air, which few people can keep up through a working day. Preprint.
